Watkins Glen International Raceway, NY
Ever since the Indy races where canceled at Watkins Glen for the 4th of July weekend rumors have been flying that Phish is looking to book a festival at the race track in upstate NY.
After a relatively low turnout at Festival 8 on the west coast in 2009 Phish is looking to bring the fest back to the northeast in 2011.
What better place to do it than Watkins Glen race track? The venue is known for it’s ability to handle large crowds.
Sources close to us at the track in Watkins Glen have reported Phish is planning a 4 day festival in 2011. Tickets will be from $190 to $240 and include camping. We were also told the signing of the contract is imminent.
We were not able to confirm the 4th of July weekend, however since it will be a four day festival its likely it will be that weekend.

What intrigues me the most about this festival is the venue and historically what this means for Phish. The Watkins Glen race track hasn’t seen a music festival of this magnitude since it hosted Summer Jam in 1973 with The Band, The Allman Brothers, & The Grateful Dead. That event drew over 600,000 fans and shut down roadways for miles.
My home town is in Corning, NY just 15 miles south of Watkins Glen. My father grew up in the area in the late 60′s & early 70′s attended both Woodstock & Summer Jam. I’m excited by the thought of being able to return to the concert fields where my parents, aunts & uncles and jammed out over 35 years ago.
Back in December Watkins Glen International Raceway addressed the rumors in a piece to the Corning Leader. Here is an excerpt from that article.
“Fueling the “Phish at The Glen” rumors, fans have pointed to WGI’s proven capacity to handle large crowds, its proximity to Interstate Highway 86 and the recent loss of its IndyCar race on Fourth of July weekend.
On Tuesday, WGI president Michael Printup didn’t elaborate on what bands or any possible dates, but he did acknowledge the track has been considering hosting concerts.
“We’re talking to some folks, except that it’s so far off right now,” he said. “There’s no ink on paper, there’s discussions and phone calls. If we can get it done in cooperation with Schuyler County, we’d like to get it done.”
