Umphrey’s McGee | Fillmore Detroit | 2.5.11
Umphrey’s McGee Brings Real Rock Back to the Motor City DETROIT, MI – Expectations were high for the return of UM to Detroit, and a sold-out crowd at the Fillmore found their dancing shoes were a necessity for the non-stop onslaught that faced them. The venue filled slowly due to a late-winter snow storm that left many motorists stranded on local roads. Chicago-based Orchard Lounge (downtempo DJ) opened the show and was a great improvement over basic house music, but their position stage right next to Myers’ drum kit left them fairly hidden. Enjoyable beats, but the party didn’t start until six grown men came on stage, hands above their heads, horns held high, and…
Review | 7 Walkers @ Tupelo Music Hall | 12.28.2010
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT – As the Year 2010 was coming to a close on a wintery night in the Green Mountain State. There was something hot happening at The Tupelo Music Hall located in White River Junction Vermont on December 28th, The 7 Walkers were in town to promote their self-titled album The 7 Walkers. Despite the cold snowy weather that was hitting the east coast hard, I decide to make a run for the 7 Walkers show. This was my first time to this venue so I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I pulled up I noticed several people were carrying coolers. Come to find…

Picture Show: The Rhythm Devils at the Ogden Theater
Can’t wait to see these guys headline Hoxeyville in August. Keller’s Friend of the Devil was an inspired, respectful, and oh so Keller. Mickey and Bill got their groove on and made me remember the drums at Rothbury. Enjoy!

Phish Photos Setlist | 6.29.10 | Canandaigua, NY
Phish played last night in Canandaigua at CMAC a gem of a venue in one of the most beautiful parts of upstate NY. The region long known for one of the best places in the northeast for boating, wine tasting, and perfect summers wheather is now getting a reputation for having one of the best outdoor amphitheaters in the area. Phish is in the first month of their summer tour. The foursome from Vermont is playing some of their best music of their 20+ year career. Highlights of this show for the first set were Reba & David Bowie. The second set was one of the best of the summer with a great cover of The Beatles “I Am The Walrus.”…
Gallery: Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa at Summer Camp 2010
I hadn’t seen ZPZ since Rothbury, and I think they’ve been taking vitamins. This show gave me goosebumps, and not just for the helicopter-ing, horns, and stage presence. These guys know how to perform and put on what I thought was a SCAMP2010 top-10.
Gallery: Rare daytime pics of EOTO from Summer Camp 2010
Just as good in the daytime.
Photos: Papadosio, live at the Loft in Lansing, Michigan
The most I had heard of Papadosio was during my sprint past the Campfire stage at last weekend’s Summer Camp Festival. I’m thrilled to have fixed that situation last night, when they came to Lansing and threw down at the Loft. After an inspiring opening set by the Macpodz, I found myself in for a treat. I truly feel that these types of musicians are the future of music. No longer content to play one instrument, these musicians drop into and out of percussion roles, guitar playing, keyboards, and vocals, weaving a dance of improvisational and downright provoking music. I found myself hanging on each note, wondering where they’d take each fantastical voyage. From psychadelic…
Summer Camp: Keller Williams
Keller’s just so damn cute you want to take him home and make him a peanut butter sammich, watch cartoons and chill. Would have loved to see the new “Keller & the Keels” but alas this was a solo performance. One of the biggest issues I had with Summer Camp is that Keller supposedly “gave away his shoes”. This is an issue because every time I’ve seen the guy (even in northern michigan in the 40′s) he doesn’t wear shoes. Keep it casual, Keller. Great show, happy dancing music on a late afternoon / early evening set.
Summer Camp: ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra)
With a name like Animal Liberation Orchestra you know these are some crazy cats. Zach Gill (Keyboards, Vocals) went to High School with Jack Johnson, who helped produce the band’s first album. They put on a great show at Summer Camp, and I loved the slide guitar.
Summercamp: Cirque du Womp
This year was all about the WOMP and late-nights outside the Soulshine tent were filled with beautiful performances of fire-breathing, poi, and juggling. Shout-outs to my friend Majik from East Lansing, MI for putting on quite the show (the blonde with awesome dreads). Music was a womptastic mix by Seek Selekta.
The Macpodz at Summer Camp 2010
The Macpodz are a tried and tested band from Ann Arbor Michigan that bring a lot to the table for a jam band. And they don’t have a guitar player, either. Brennan explained in an exclusive interview with BTJ that this puts them in a great position to be able to jam with some of the best guitar players around. This time it was Jake Cinninger from Umphrey’s Mcgee joining them on stage to jam. Video from the interview posted soon. The heat was sweltering – the barricades too hot to touch. These guys drew a moderate crowd of people who all seemed to completely love their unique blend. We’re sure to see more collaboration, touring…
STS9 Late-night set at the Barn – Summer Camp 2010
STS9′s inclusion in Summer Camp may have been due to the fact that these old guys create soundscapes on a grand scale. Traditional late-night fare, STS9′s blend of electronica with live instruments makes them doubly enjoyable. They rocked the house past 3AM and even did an encore. The room was a bit too full for my tastes, and the way that this venue handles photo passes meant that there were none – STS9 forbid any media from accessing “the pit” at the front of the stage. I’m not sure why artists/management/show staff do this thing other than for a power trip. It’s not like the drunk girlfriends/jail bait that you miracle’d with passes are worth…
