If you thought Umphrey’s McGee would take it easy after a sit in from Bob Weir, then you would be sorely mistaken. They have made steady gains in the northeast in the past few years and have amassed a loyal and large following away from their home turf of the mid-west. Starting the third of four nights at Brooklyn Bowl right on schedule at about 8: 30 p.m, they made it easy for the local worker bees to come out and still make the morning shift. When the lights went down lighting director Jeff Waful lit up the stage for a kaleidoscope jam with punchy vocals set off by Umphrey’s dual battery attack. The gigantic disco ball and brick walls of the Bowl set the atmosphere perfectly.

Before closing out the first set with “Live and Let Die”, the band pointed out that mantis is the greek word for prophet and played “Mantis Ghetts” which sparked the crowd like a superbowl touchdown.  Usual goofball antics included  Ryan Stasik flipping  his bass and playing the back side of it, and  the band promising not to make fun of Joel Cummins for reasons untold for the rest of the evening- in a maybe dickish but still fun way. A blistering and technically perfect “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” ended the second set, and it wasn’t the last surprise.  Next, Brooklyn Bowl owner Pete Shapiro gave an intro for an energetic Biz Markie who joined on a cover of  Steve Miller’s  “The Joker.”

Their latest album “Death by Stereo” is currently on pre-order, available as a digital download, cd or on vinyl and they are offering a deluxe edition that comes complete with a surprise nugget.

Umphreys is moving along with a packed touring schedule, catch them next at Catskill Chill or check them out on www.archive.org while you browse the latest gallery.
