Caught an amazing show in Ann Arbor, Michigan Friday night as Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their Michigan tour at the Michigan Theater. Opening band was Ann Arbor’s own The Macpodz throwing down their unique breed of jazz rock.

We hadn’t seen UM since Rothbury, and while a completely vibe in the historic Michigan Theater, the show’s energy was kicked up a notch by playing in such confined quarters. I found it interesting that after the Macpodz cleared the stage thrust UM still played where the normal stage and proscenium would have been. This extra 20′ seemed to give lighting designer Jefferson Wafful some room to play in, as we’d see later on in set 2 as the hydra invaded!

My own favorite? The “Rastaman Chant” cover in set two.
