WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – This past weekend G.P.G.D.S. played their last show of 2010 at  Club Infinity in the suburbs of Buffalo to a packed house of over 300 fans.

The club is under new ownership & proving they are serious about getting in good talent with the booking of G.P.G.D.S. Fans braved  sub freezing temperatures & blowing snow to warm their souls with one of the best live original roots reggae bands currently on tour.

G.P.G.D.S. played a non stop 2 hour set that was one of the best we had heard in 2010. The bands sound consists of original roots reggae, dub, and improv creating the perfect blend of reggae & jam. On this night Giant Panda’s set exemplified why they are the pioneers in upstate NY reggae with their extended improvs.

James Searl - GPGDS

The quartet from Rochester NY has a sound that is beyond their years. We are blessed to live in such a great area for original reggae music with bands such as John Brown’s Body, 10 Ft Ganja Plant, and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad.

The crowd at Club Infinity was older than the last time we had seen them play an all ages show at Club Infinity. It was a good mix of Buffalo natives as well as Rochester fans who came down the road to support their home town band.

We had a chance to catch up with Ryan who was seeing G.P.G.D.S. for the first time and he had this to say about the band.

“To me, G.P.G.D.S.s real value isn’t in their ability to reproduce 70′s roots reggae, which I enjoy but don’t reach for when I’m picking the next track. It’s in the ventures they take when they launch out of the Dub and into the aether, exploring the way a truly locked in group of musicians can to evolve their sound in the moment.

At Club Infiniti, there were at least two of those journeys where they were highly successful with the improvisation. Fans of Phish would call it “Type II jamming” when the band would go beyond the normal chord structure and dive into the unknown.

G.P.G.D.S. does a great job of making smooth transitions from simple song structures to complex organic jams that hold little resemblance to their origin, but still seem full of structure and are more progressive rock than reggae.”

Dylan Savage - GPGDS

Giant Panda  has been touring relentlessly since they where formed in 2004 performing hundreds of shows a year from the frozen tundra of Vermont to the sunny beaches of California.

Their most recent Fall tour of 2010 saw the band playing headlining gigs with other bands such as House On Spring another upstate NY reggae band from Oswego NY.

In 2011 GPGDS has the pleasure of opening for none other than BTJ favorite’s Umphrey’s McGee in Boston, NY, Philly, & Baltimore. The umphreaks are sure to be in for a pleasant surprise. This is a real honor to be opening for Umphrey’s McGee a band that usually tours alone and doesn’t play with supporting acts.

The bands next show will be 1.1.11 in Rochester. Check the bands website for full details.

Many thanks to Adam Hudson for taping & shooting this show and big ups to GPGDS for providing us with a soundboard patch. This is one recording you definitely want to add to your collection.
