Apparently Umphrey’s McGee digs playing in the Empire State. Last night was the bands 5th stop in NY this summer and their 4th consecutive year playing an outdoor concert at part of the Buffalo Place Concert Series.

This 2 hour plus set featured mostly newer songs from the bands more recent albums. They did however reach deep into their extensive song collection for the opener “Much Obliged” off the bands sophomore release “Songs For Older Women” from 1999.

Notable covers included Pink Floyd’s “In The Flesh” and “Another Brick In The Wall” which were executed to perfection. The abridged version of these songs was followed by another cover “We’re Going To War.”

Other highlights included “The Bottom Half”, “Triple Wide”, and the encore “Mulches Odyssey.”

We were glad to see Umphrey’s back at Thursday At The Square after playing at the Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo last year. While that venue is nice in it’s own right the natural bowl shape of Lafayette Square allows for a wider stage and elevated viewing areas.

The crowd was really digging the band who has been playing gigs in Buffalo for 12 years and this is the biggest crowd we’ve seen downtown this summer.

We can’t wait for their return in the fall when they are sure to book another show at the Town Ballroom.
