Listen to “Holy Grail” off the new album while you read:
One of our favorite bands Toubab Krewe, the rock quintet from Asheville, NC with a West African musical education, will be releasing their latest studio album ‘TK2,’on September 7th on National Geo Music.
A favorite at festivals worldwide from Tennessee’s Bonnaroo to Africa’s Festival au Desert and at packed shows around the U.S., the longtime friends formed the band in 2005 and traveled to Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast to study and perform. The band’s name, like their music, is a fusion of
cultures: “Toubab” means “foreigner” in Mali’s Bambara language and “Krewe” is a salute to New Orleans.
Toubab Krewe’s 2008 ‘Live At The Orange Peel’ was rapturously reviewed, winning the group praise from NPR’s All Things Considered for their “amped-up” sound and “gyrating fans,” from Afropop Worldwide for setting “a new standard for fusions,” and from OkayPlayer for their “lively, improvisational style.”
‘TK2′ deepens the Toubab Krewe experience to create an album that is a full-on tripped-out headphones experience as well as a dance party the Village Voice describes as “a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-grit frenzy.”
“Toubab Krewe has such a visceral, ear-yanking quality that in the band’s capable hands you justmight find your definitions of what is/is not rock ‘n’ roll and worldbeat being completely rewritten. This is the sound of liberation.”
With alternately fierce, shimmering, surfadelic and slide-home guitar riffs, polyrhythmic percussion from many nations, the sounds of West Africa’s kora and kamel ngoni, a beat that doesn’t stop and the feel of a band completely confident in its groove, you’ll understand why Blurt raved:
Toubab Krewe are Teal Brown (drums), Drew Heller (guitar), Justin Perkins (kora, kamel ngoni, guitar), David Pransky (bass) and Luke Quaranta (percussion).
They will celebrate their album release with a special performance at NY’s Brooklyn Bowl on September 10, 2010. Check out the bands website for a full listing of tour dates.
