Photo Essay: Umphrey’s McGee in Louisville

20120922-_DSC6695

Sometimes, when your friends call and say “want to go to Umphrey’s in Louisville?” you just have to say yes.  I usually get three or four UM shows a year, but this has been a busy one, and I hadn’t been to church since 11/25/2011 (With Beats Antique opener – YUM.) I’d missed Detroit (had a paid gig) and Summercamp this year, then was tied up with Electric Forest and missed the Michigan show.  I couldn’t wait, and the six-hour drive south was filled with familiar sounds of past shows, interspersed with the tidings of JamOn. As we’re heading into the city, I get a text from an old friend, “Are you in Louisville?” to…

CHICAGO - Last Saturday Umphrey’s McGee performed their 2nd anual UMBOWL in Chicago. This is a unique concert experience for Umphrey’s McGee’s most loyal fans. The show is broken down into 4 “quarters” of music. Each quarter having a different theme. Quarter 1 was “Choose Your Own Experience.” Fans where presented with a list of song choices to decide the opening tunes. Fans voted via text message and the results where tallied in real time. The highlights of this set where “In The Kitchen” with Spanish Lyrics played to perfection and the Daft Punk-esque prog metal jam “Bona Fid Lovin.” Quater 2 was a Stew Art Event described as “a one of a kind Umphrey’s innovation.” This…

Picture Show: The Rhythm Devils at the Ogden Theater

Rhythm Devils

Can’t wait to see these guys headline Hoxeyville in August. Keller’s Friend of the Devil was an inspired, respectful, and oh so Keller. Mickey and Bill got their groove on and made me remember the drums at Rothbury. Enjoy!

I hadn’t seen ZPZ since Rothbury, and I think they’ve been taking vitamins. This show gave me goosebumps, and not just for the helicopter-ing, horns, and stage presence. These guys know how to perform and put on what I thought was a SCAMP2010 top-10.

Photos: Papadosio, live at the Loft in Lansing, Michigan

The most I had heard of Papadosio was during my sprint past the Campfire stage at last weekend’s Summer Camp Festival. I’m thrilled to have fixed that situation last night, when they came to Lansing and threw down at the Loft. After an inspiring opening set by the Macpodz, I found myself in for a treat. I truly feel that these types of musicians are the future of music. No longer content to play one instrument, these musicians drop into and out of percussion roles, guitar playing, keyboards, and vocals, weaving a dance of improvisational and downright provoking music. I found myself hanging on each note, wondering where they’d take each fantastical voyage. From psychadelic…

Summer Camp: Keller Williams

summercampfest-6194

Keller’s just so damn cute you want to take him home and make him a peanut butter sammich, watch cartoons and chill. Would have loved to see the new “Keller & the Keels” but alas this was a solo performance. One of the biggest issues I had with Summer Camp is that Keller supposedly “gave away his shoes”. This is an issue because every time I’ve seen the guy (even in northern michigan in the 40′s) he doesn’t wear shoes. Keep it casual, Keller. Great show, happy dancing music on a late afternoon / early evening set.
