Interview: Tara Nevins
Tara Nevins is an amazing fiddle player and a passionate songwriter. She is also a member of Donna the Buffalo. Her latest release is her solo album, Wood and Stone. Tara called in to discuss her love of old-time music, how Donna the Buffalo came together and working with Larry Campbell. McClain Johnson: How old were you when you first started playing fiddle? Tara Nevins: Fifth Grade. McClain Johnson: Do you remember the first song you learned how to play? Tara Nevins: Heck no. I started out playing classical music in school. Then I discovered fiddle later on. I went to college for classical studies too. I discovered old-time music, traditional fiddle music. When I…
Review: Tara Nevins “Wood and Stoneâ€
ITHACA, NY – To say Tara Nevins second solo release “Wood and Stone†is catchy would be a gross understatement. The Donna the Buffalo co-founder has long made bluegrass/roots-rock fans revel in harmonic vocals and catchy fiddle licks. But something magical happens in “Wood and Stone†when producer/musician Larry Campbell and Tara Nevins got together: Synergy in the truest form. When 1 +1 = 3. Stream: “You’re Still Driving That Truck” [Audio clip: view full post to listen] The album kicks off the self-titled track with a signature catchy beat, lyrics memories of family, while fiddles provide a nice chorus backdrop. “All I Know is that Wood and Stone’ll be the better part of me,†repeats…

Review: Akron/Family Enlightens Ithaca 09.16.09
ITHACA, NY | This week Ithaca’s Castaways hosted one of the most enlightened bands making waves in the indie and jam circuits. The 150 fans that packed the venue were treated to an hour and a half of schizophrenic, juxtaposed, genre-busting melodies from the Akron/Family. Prior to hitting the stage that night, word was Akron/Family, a trio of guitar, bass, drums and a Carrot-Top chest of fun instruments, was known for their shows constantly building in energy. As the crowd would come to find out, Ithaca’s show wasn’t to be any different. Following a 6 minute spacey, intimate “Meek Warriorâ€, Akron/Family delved right into one of their newest and catchiest tracks “River†from their newest…
Grassroots Festival 2009 Lineup
*** Click HERE for 2009 band schedule *** July 16th to 19th 2009. Our favorite festival of the year – the 19th annual Fingerlakes Grassroots Festival has announced their lineup. Donna the Buffalo has been hosting the festival for 19 years to raise money for the fight against AIDS and other worthy causes, provide regional and national exposure for excellent local musicians, and expose the local and regional music lovers to excellent national and international artists. The festival is presented over a four day period (Thursday-Sunday) on four stages which run ridiculously long hours to accommodate the 60 some bands that play the festival. The band selection reflects the eclectic tastes of our ‘amorphous committee’,…
Donna The Buffalo Live @ Artpark NY 08.20.2008
LEWISTON, NY – Donna The Buffalo is probably the band that I’ve seen the most over the past several years that I’ve been going to shows. We see them multiple times each year at Blue Heron Festival and the Grassroots Festival. Every time out is a good show. I especially like the one’s in Western New York because the ‘Herd has a great showing and it’s a chance to catch up with friends that I don’t see every day. This was the smallest turn out of any show that I’ve been to at Art Park this summer but it made it even better. The entire ‘herd was dancing and swaying the night away as DTB…
Grassroots 2008 Lineup!
Grassroots in Trumansburgh, NY is one of my favorite festivals of the year. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the lineup announcement since purchasing our 4 day festival and camping passes a couple of months ago. The festival will be headlined by Donna The Buffalo, Lucinda Williams, & Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Other performers include reggae pioneers John Brown’s Body who perform to massive crowds in their home town. I’m also looking forward to see The Hackensaw Boys, Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad, and up and coming newgrass greats Big Leg Emma who I’ve been following for years at the Great Blue Heron festival. For the complete lineup >
