Gallery: Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa at Summer Camp 2010
I hadn’t seen ZPZ since Rothbury, and I think they’ve been taking vitamins. This show gave me goosebumps, and not just for the helicopter-ing, horns, and stage presence. These guys know how to perform and put on what I thought was a SCAMP2010 top-10.

Just as good in the daytime.
Summer Camp: Keller Williams
Keller’s just so damn cute you want to take him home and make him a peanut butter sammich, watch cartoons and chill. Would have loved to see the new “Keller & the Keels” but alas this was a solo performance. One of the biggest issues I had with Summer Camp is that Keller supposedly “gave away his shoes”. This is an issue because every time I’ve seen the guy (even in northern michigan in the 40′s) he doesn’t wear shoes. Keep it casual, Keller. Great show, happy dancing music on a late afternoon / early evening set.
Summer Camp: ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra)
With a name like Animal Liberation Orchestra you know these are some crazy cats. Zach Gill (Keyboards, Vocals) went to High School with Jack Johnson, who helped produce the band’s first album. They put on a great show at Summer Camp, and I loved the slide guitar.
Summercamp: Cirque du Womp
This year was all about the WOMP and late-nights outside the Soulshine tent were filled with beautiful performances of fire-breathing, poi, and juggling. Shout-outs to my friend Majik from East Lansing, MI for putting on quite the show (the blonde with awesome dreads). Music was a womptastic mix by Seek Selekta.
STS9 Late-night set at the Barn – Summer Camp 2010
STS9′s inclusion in Summer Camp may have been due to the fact that these old guys create soundscapes on a grand scale. Traditional late-night fare, STS9′s blend of electronica with live instruments makes them doubly enjoyable. They rocked the house past 3AM and even did an encore. The room was a bit too full for my tastes, and the way that this venue handles photo passes meant that there were none – STS9 forbid any media from accessing “the pit” at the front of the stage. I’m not sure why artists/management/show staff do this thing other than for a power trip. It’s not like the drunk girlfriends/jail bait that you miracle’d with passes are worth…
Yonder Mountain String Band at Summer Camp 2010
Yonder is always a treat in any festival lineup and their performance Saturday was no exception.
FLASHBACK: Summer Camp 2010 Umphrey’s McGee
An epic first set for UM Friday evening opening with Rocker pt. 2. Highlights included an amazing “Girlfriend is Better” Talking Heads cover. I’d been getting a “feeling” all day and by the end of glory, was calling a Cemetery Walk encore. I got it, and the weekend was just beginning. I’d just been handed a UM Summer Sampler the day before which features: 1. Cemetery Walk 1.15.10 2. The Linear 3.12.10 3. Turn & Dub 2.25.10 4. Conduit 2.28.10 5. August 2.13.10 6. 1348 3.13.10 7. Nothing too Fancy 8. Got your Milk (Right Here) 9. Nothing Too Fancy 2.9.10 And was blown away that they did Cem, Turn & Dub, and The Linear…
