The McLovins | Norfolk CT | 10.17.2009

The McLovins

McLovins have a sound and talent that is beyond their years. The band that got it’s start covering Phish songs in their parent’s basement and posting them on YouTube is now on the Live Music Archive. The trio is comprised of Jake (drums), Jason (bass) and Jeff (guitar) and have a unique ability for live improvisation.  Even though they were in middle (and even elementary) school when Phish went on hiatus in 2004 they didn’t let their age interfere with their passion. The band draws from many different influences from jazz and funk to soul and rock. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Even though they are still teenagers they have established themselves as…

Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird is in the middle of a Church tour across the US that sees him playing some great venue’s including the famed Asbury Hall at Babeville in Buffalo, NY. Many thanks to the guys at the Calcutta Blog for the reviews and photos.   Photos & Review by Michael James Murray:   An Andrew Bird concert is like a magical experience. You don’t necessarily understand how the act is being performed but the awe and surprise of it all leaves you speechless and applauding for more.   I was fortunate enough to witness an enchanting experience like this last night in the beautiful church of Ani DiFranco at Asbury Hall in Buffalo, Ny. Lotus | Buffalo | 10.30.09

Lotus

Buffalo continues to have one of it’s best fall lineups in years. Just over the past few weeks we’ve seen, moe., Mike Gordon, STS9, and now the electronic, progressive, instrumental sensation Lotus at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo, NY. Golden Ghost: [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Lotus laid down the funk with sexy improvisational grooves that kept heads bouncing and feet moving all night. This was Lotus’s first time playing at the larger Town Ballroom a sign that the band is on the rise as it continues to break in new fans and keep the old ones coming back. Lotus’s music spans so many genres it’s hard to peg them as simply a…

The Goods: moe. Live @ Town Ballroom 10.09.2009

moe.10909-3056

This past Thursday night moe. was inducted into the Buffalo Hall of Fame. The band who hails from upstate NY considers Buffalo a 2nd home and was delighted to return to their old stomping grounds for a sold out crowd. UB is where the band first started back in the early 90′s and they have had an incredible following here throughout the years. Friday nights show was epic with classics such as Tailspin & Captain America. Highlights included the funked out “Tubing The River Styx” and crowd pleasing “Bear Song” which saw an incredible crowd interaction between moe. and the Buffalo faithful. Umphrey’s Mcgee 10.09.09 Orbit Room Grand Rapids

umphreys-6695

Sometimes the best part of seeing a band twice in a week is having a recent show to compare it too.   Umphrey’s McGee’s jam-packed performance Friday at the Orbit room was a night & day comparison to the show a week previous in Ann Arbor.  With a fantastic jazz-funk-rock opener by the Macpodz, UM hit the stage hard and fast with an almost 9-minute Fussy Dutchman, showing their intentions for the night they had in store.  An ETI mid first-set promised “Wait there’s more!” and the first set closes with a fantasic tour-titled Mantis. FF [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Set two opens with Jajunk, quickly into Hangover, then a reggae-inspired FF.  Then…

Umphrey’s McGee 10.02.09 Michigan Theater Ann Arbor

umphreysmcgee-10-02-09-6220

Caught an amazing show in Ann Arbor, Michigan Friday night as Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their Michigan tour at the Michigan Theater. Opening band was Ann Arbor’s own The Macpodz throwing down their unique breed of jazz rock. We hadn’t seen UM since Rothbury, and while a completely vibe in the historic Michigan Theater, the show’s energy was kicked up a notch by playing in such confined quarters. I found it interesting that after the Macpodz cleared the stage thrust UM still played where the normal stage and proscenium would have been. This extra 20′ seemed to give lighting designer Jefferson Wafful some room to play in, as we’d see later on in set 2…

Free SBD Download: The Brew @ Sunnview Farm 09.18.09

The Brew from Amesbury, MA are maturing before our very eyes. We first covered this up and coming jam band a yeah and half  ago when they first started playing in Buffalo, NY. Since  then the band has released their 3rd studio album titled “Back To The Woods.” In this set from Ghent, NY The Brew played several classic originals such as “Faces” and “Seen It All.” It also includes several songs off new album including “Black Train” & “Seen It All.” One of my favorite tracks from this set is “Radio Swiss” off the bands 2006 Album “The Key.” This is an excellent soundboard recording for your collection.
