Ever thought you could design a better logo for Umphrey’s McGee? Well here’s your chance. Chicago-based rockers Umphrey’s McGee are seeking a new logo/theme for 2011 with the help of the Creative Allies art community. The genre-spanning and barrier busting sextet seeks a visual interpretation of their name that represents the musically muscular and relentlessly inventive sound the band has cultivated both live and in the studio over the past 12 years. Though many logos, images and fonts have represented Umphrey’s McGee over the years, the band has long looked for a singular image that will represent them effectively, and stand the test of time. An epic first set for UM Friday evening opening with Rocker pt. 2. Highlights included an amazing “Girlfriend is Better” Talking Heads cover. Dumpstaphunk blew out the barn last night and by the time I could get to the stage I found Jake Cinninger from Umphrey’s sitting in and shredding.  One of the reasons to go to festivals vs. concerts is for this kind of shared moment.

I have to say I’ve waited for months to see this amazing duo, and as Rach likes to call it, they’re both the “Softer Side of Sears” when it comes to having the raw emotion available to pull off a fricking mandolin / guitar combo. Â Color me impressed as they came out and had the audience in stitches during the sound check, shouting “Hey tom, maybe a little bit less of you in my monitors”. Umphrey’s McGee Delivers Unique Experience at UMBOWL 2010
Lincoln Theater, Chicago -Â April 24 Umphrey’s McGee kicked off the inaugural UMBOWL in their home town of Chicago to rave reviews. Those who were lucky enough to get tickets were treated to the most unique concert experiences ever. For those of you not familiar with UMBOWL here’s the break down. The show consisted of 4 “quarters.” Each “quarter” was approximately an hour long. The first set was acoustic and the band played songs chosen by the fans. The second quarter featured improvs by the band with suggestions from the fans who sent requests via text. The 3rd quarter was an all electric request set.
