Interview: Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad

GPGDS

Interview by Tyler Curtis Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, a band out of Rochester NY, is making a huge impression on the reggae scene. The band has gone from as many as 7 musicians, to now a 4 piece reggae dub powerhouse, providing you that downright kinky reggae, to that full dub sound. While they may not be considered a “jam” band, they present their audiences with a top-of-the-line good time, and music to match the concert experience. You can catch them at music festivals like Nateva this summer, and they are most likely coming to an area near you on their never ending tour. Interview with bassist James Searl TC: First let me start off…

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad Kicks Off 2010 Winter Tour In Buffalo

nietzsches_17

Photos & review by Buffalo native and new BTJ contributer Matthew Buckley. Nietzsche’s – Buffalo, NY Rochester natives, and roots reggae touring veterans are back at it in 2010 in a big way. After performing hundreds of crowd pleasing shows the past several years the band is back on the road, this time in support of their latest release “Live Up.” Being my first live, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, experience Iwasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I knew I was in store for some Festival quality Reggae music, but didn’t know much about their visual stimulants. As I approached the stage, I noticed a large projection screen behind the drums along with four LED…

New Album: Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad “Live UP”

GiantPandaGDS_LiveUp_400

One of our favorite bands G.P.G.D.S. has just released their 2nd album. This “best of” live album from select shows in 2008 and 2009 features original songs that fans from Maine to California have grown to love over the years. The production on this album which blends soundboard and audience recordings gives an intense live sound that brings the feel of a night out with Giant Panda to your headphones. Rarely will you find a band with such a unique  roots reggae sound. The band has the ability to channel the essences and improv of the Grateful Dead and seamlessly blend it with dub and roots reggae the likes of which haven’t been seen since the 70′s….

G.P.G.D.S is defining east coast reggae every night out with its intense dubs, melodic guitar play, and amazing improv. The band finally had a chance to play the “Pirate Ship” aka Nietzsche’s in Buffalo, NY and raised the roof with two sets of intense original reggae. The bands music can be described as lively, roots reggae, with soul, and a psychedelic appeal. After playing a few shows in the suburbs it was great to see the band play before a heady crowd in downtown Buffalo. The band from Rochester is fresh off an east coast tour with west coast reggae sensations Rebelution that saw them playing from NY to Florida. 2009 is already looking like…

DUB > Missing You [Audio clip: view full post to listen] GPGDS killed it on Saturday night here in Buffalo.  I went to this show unsure of what to expect. I had heard the guys on Sirius and listened to a few of their shows on The Archive but wasn’t completely sold. I love keyboards in a band and GPGDS has a dynamic duo that laid down sick rhythms entire night. GPGDS music just makes a person feel good. It’s some kind of natural aphrodisiac that gives you a sense of elation that is rarely found in music. Think The Wailers meets The Dead and you’ve got GPGDS. Who is GPGDS? They are a 6…
