Phish Festival July 1-3 Watkins Glen NY

Phish Super Ball 9

Phish Super Ball IX
July 1st to July 3rd 2011

WATKINS GLEN, NY – Phish has finally officially announced their “Super Ball 9″ festival to take place July 1-3 at the famed Watkins Glen International Race Track in Watkins Glen, NY.

This will be Phish’s 9th festival and first since “Festival 8″ in the fall of ’09 in Indio California.

The festival titled “Super Ball IX” will be the first major festival held at Watkins Glen International since the infamous “Summer Jam” in 1973 featuring The Allaman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, & The Band.

Phish’s latest festival will take place at Watkins Glen International raceway nestled in upstate NY on the souther tip of Seneca Lake just 15 miles north of my home town. “The Glen” as it’s affectionally known first opened in 1953 and sits on 550 acres of rolling grass, fields, and includes 3.4 mile race track. Strictly known for racing events WGI is changing things by landing the festival of all festivals. If things go well this year Watkins Glen International is interested in doing this performance again.

“This is a momentous event for Watkins Glen International and we are thrilled to host Phish during the 4th of July holiday weekend,” said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “Our location in central New York, the beauty of the Finger Lakes Region in July, and our spacious campgrounds make WGI the perfect location for this festival. We worked very closely with the officials for the town of Watkins Glen and Schuyler County and I cannot thank them enough for their support in bringing this level of musical entertainment to our community. 2011 really is the year to Bring It here at Watkins Glen International!”

Super Ball IX will be the first time that Phish has ever performed at Watkins Glen International or any other motorsports facility promising a unique experience for the band’s dedicated fans. The 3-day event weekend will feature a series of performances by the New England-based band along with numerous activities, attractions and art installations.

Tickets start at $200 and include admission for the entire weekend as well as convenient onsite camping. Additional camping and travel packages will also be available.

It was June 1973,  and that summer I was working at a car lot . I spent my days there and my nights hanging out with my buddies as possible at the various haunts, hangouts and gathering places followed by my daily routine at the car lot.
One day while I was going about my business at the car lot I got a call from Walt known as Wild Walt. Walt was a skinny guy who ran track, not much of a troublemaker like I was but a ball buster just the same so that’s why I liked hanging with him. When I took the phone call all that Walt said was, “there’s supposed to be three hundred thousand people there tonight!” I had no idea what he was talking about so I paused and started thinking, what was he talking about? I thought for another moment & realized he must be referring to a concert, so my only reply was, “there is only one thing I do not understand” Walt replied, “what?” I answered and said, “why we are not there yet!” and I hung up the phone.

Getting out of work was my next chore so I walked into the owner’s office, told him I had to leave, immediately.  He asked,  “why?”  I could think of nothing so I lied, I told him I had to be in Atlanta on Monday morning to be a character witness in court. That was all I could think of but it worked. I was out of there in 10 minutes with my $ 90.00 pay and off to Walt’s house. When I got there,  his mom was making KUKULIs or whatever they are called,  a Polish pastry, they were lying all over the house she said, “Oh , I think it is so nice you and Walter are going on a picnic!”.

We laughed, packed quick and hit the road, Walt had called Sully prior to my arrival and “he said he was “in” so we picked him up. His mom was a little more inquisitive and I remember standing at the bottom of the steps talking to her while he was upstairs getting his things together. He was coming up with some lame excuses too, but as quick as we got out of Walt’s house we were out of Sully’s too. Yes, we were on our way. I do not recall how or where we got it but all I remember we had to “load up” on was some Tyrolia Wine. They used to have a commercial on television advertising it showing Ethnic people dancing in circles singing, “drink, drink, drink, Tyrolia” so that’s the chorus I still recall.

I had a small yellow Chevy and we rolled out and headed to the freeway-EAST. I’m guessing we had a map, but who knows. I was driving, at first & then Walt & I were enjoying the Tyrolia so Sully grabbed the keys- a smart move probably. He took the controls and would not even stop to let Walt & I make a pit stop. All Sully kept saying was “shut up Walt” (truth be told Walt could be a pest).

Watkins Glen is about 5 hours plus from our base  and we violated every speed limit and traffic law  to get there. Once in New York we were stopped at the Throughway Gates & asked some questions. Sully who had commandeered my vehicle after the pit stop just drove through the gates. I figured that was it but no one chased us. He did the same thing when we got off the exit towards Watkins Glen-the traffic was a nightmare & the New York Highway Patrol was swamped. They stopped us, asked for ID to see if we had business or were residents, Sully went down a hill through the grass and around them. All in my car. I was worried but again they did not pursue us-reckon it was out of control. I figured they had my license number & we would get caught- eventually BUT like some many things I have done I never got caught for any of them (6 arrest no convictions by the way) so we never did get in any trouble for this either!

We made the town, parked where we could and started strolling; the place was packed with freaks, all nice people, Harri Krishna’s, and people from all over the place. My fellow Americans! There was no hate, no people arguing or starting crap with any one. All were friendly, loving, peaceful, sharing all they had, helping eachother, all were nice to each other & sharing a good time together. This was the way it was back then, everyone was generous, kind,  no hating, no body better than any one else and really “love was in the air”. Today could take a lesson from yesterday here and WOW I wish it was like that now. Without going into any lengthy detail about all we did & all we saw, rest assured that we all had a good time. We  had more fun than imaginable and enjoyed all we could. I think we were gone 3-4 days-we actually sacked out in a local families front room after making friends with 3 local babes who fed us and took us into their parent’s home. Again, my fellow Americans. That’s the way it should be and that’s the way it was back in June 1973 with Walt , aka: “Wild Walt “Sully” and me.

Three of the top bands played  we saw the Gratefull Dead, The Band & The Alman Brothers. It was known as Summer Jam 1973 (Google it) it was reportedly the largest Rock Festival Ever (so far) .
NOW 40 years after we are going again.  I’m still a smart ass but a kind & generous dude. Ive had nothing but fun my whole life, I have a beautiful family, all educated and doing well, Im still married to my first girlfriend, I take good care of them all and have done so with no boss . I enjoy all I do . You should go to this concert people. Go there be nice to everyone, enjoy your felolow Americans  ,  you will have a good time. Go & enjoy a memory again- I will be there with Sully, & Wild Walt going on ……………….40 years later.
